My wife has an 04' 325i just turned 51K miles on it.
She needed her car for school while I needed to do some work on my bushings etc... so my friend at BMW set me up with a 2010 BMW 328i free of charge for 10 days (because I was lazy) so both my wife and I noticed this car was sluggish. If you put it in DS mode it had "SIMILAR" performance as her 325 but not exact. She hated it. I don't remember what the seats felt like. I do remember sitting in a 135 and the seats were very comfy!
As far as the newer 3 series go...I prefer the E46.
I think the E60 interior is extremely cheap looking and feeling and so, the E90's interior is almost an exact model of the E60 from what I remember...same cluster and layout etc etc...
I would never own one. In fact I had a 2006 330i that had iDrive and pro navigation and had 62K mi. on it and I turned it down for a direct trade with my wife's car....at that time she had like 39K miles.

Had an '11 335d loaner recently.
The new idrive OS with it's windows over windows is a bit much. didn't take too long to get familiar with it. Liked the fact that you can shut off the aux window and actually use that space.
The Diesel really gets the car moving with loads of low and midrange torque. Easy wheelspin with the 225 tires from the factory. driving moderately heavy on the throttle and I averaged 26mpg.
The 3 Series definetly feels cramped after getting used to the 5 series. Missed the auto opening boot!
One thing that really turned me off was the steering wheel. It felt like plastic, not leather. Very stiff with no cushioning in the grip.

I have a 2009 335i coupe w/ sport package as a loner right now, in typical X35 fashion the HPFP is giving us all sorts of problems. CEL is on, yesterday it went into limp mode and the car had no power, I restarted the car and it wasn't in limp mode but you could tell somthing was still wrong. Its a shame too b/c the car when operating properly is a blast to drive.
