Hey guys, I'm new to the board but I felt the need to add my 2 cents. I have owned 11 BMWs including 2 M cars. I currently own a e46 M3 and had both e34 and e39 M5s previously. I also serve as an instructor in the BMW clubs of America and Canada. I was faced with this same dilemma, but recently purchased a Sapphire Black 550i Sport. I have had the pleasure of driving the e60 M5 and the car is incredible! But unless you are regularly tracking the car, or you live in Montana or near the Autobahn, I could not justify the extra $30k. I had placed an order for a SB M5, but my dealer made the mistake of allowing me a 550i loaner for the weekend. The 4.8l engine is pretty darn awesome in its own right. Lots of low end grunt which makes it perfect for highway driving. Fantastic ride quality and the active suspension is incredible!!! The M5 didn't come on until 5500 rpms. And although the SMG III is a bit more refined than the SMG II in my M3, it still drove my wife crazy. Took the other $30k and purchased a dedicated track car. Best of both worlds for me and my family! Just my opinion...

A stripped M5 has enough standard options imo

agree

another question is in difference of reliability and durability of M5 & 550

Welcome aboard DrKev550. Glad you joined us. I'd say your CV allows you to opine here ... and then some. Please chime in often.

By the way 530iii - I don't know what to suggest for you. The part says go for the M5. The says 550. So I guess that means go get the M5.

You will likely get more for your money at the back-end too with the M5. A 2001 740i Sport (loaded) and a 2001 M5 both retailed for about the same price (~$72,000). Today you can buy that 2001 740i for about $27,500 while the 2001 M5 might cost you $40,000.
