It is always good to know who is writing our software for the nav., .etc and where they are heading.

Microsoft platform? - no wonder the i-drive sucks (good concept, bad implementation). It's sluggish, locks up, gets confused, just like Microsoft's desktop computer software. Unfortunately, while driving a car in NOT a good time to have to reboot, or wait on the idrive to sort out your last command. If BMW is so concerned about being sued (lawyer screen, speedo error), you'd think they make sure the idrive processor and software work fluidly.

Makes me wish I didn't have NAV sometimes.

Bad doggie, BMW.

Heh - don't kid yourself about that distance figure.

Also, there are 70 systems running 7 different OSes on our cars. That more than anything contributes to the long and numerous updates.

It's not -just- Microsoft code.

Reads as though it is ENTERTAINMENT and nav only and mostly for OEM add-ons; not iDrive, which I believe is Siemens.

Actually the entire i-Drive system is based on Microsoft's technology. Siemens VDO division uses this technology to develop the i-drive system.

Actually iDrive was developed by the MOSTCooperation (http://www.mostcooperation.com) which was started by BMW, Mercedes, AUDI and Harman/Becker. It now includes many companies including Toyota, Porsche, Nissan, Jaguar, Aston Martin ect ect

Thats why the Idrives bus is called the MOST bus, and why Mercedes and Audio have similar systems to Idrive

I always thought the software for the idrive was based on the "windowsce os." Oh well...another bytes the dust!
