When my wife's car was~ 2 weeks old, we parked on an Interstae rest ares (daughter had to pee). I was sitting IN the car and a big, fat guy parked his monster SUV next to our car and me rammed his door into our car.
I got out and, sure enought, there was a nice dent in our brand new car. I tried to show it to him and he didn't even look. He started yelling at ME for bothering him, he said he wouldn't give a sh... about other peoples' cars etc. I backed off since he was obviously drunk (he smelled awful). So, those are the people that do this.

Sometime older drivers also cause dents because they have difficulty getting in and out of their cars.

Once, sitting in my e60 in the parking lot at work, an elderly man pulled into the parking space on my right. As he was having trouble getting out he pushed on the door for support and it banged into my side view mirror. He was apolegetic and clearly couldn't help himself. Fortunately no damage occured.

I agree park far and preferably against a wall on the passenger side.

I got my first door dent two weeks after getting my car, it's a couple of inches below the driver's door handle and it is quite noticeable. I'll probably get it fixed soon.
