Interesting thread... I have 225/50/WR 17 Dunlop SP Sport 01 DSST tyres on my car and the rears are nearing the wear lmit after 21,000 miles of mainly motorway driving. I am very easy on the car (on my last car an Audi A4 I got over 40,000 from all the tyres and 80,000 from the brakes..). Is this normal wear? My local delaer has offered to put new like for like replacements on for ?146 each which looks like a good price to me. Are there any other tyres you would recommend? Because I'mainly on motorways I'd rather they are durable than extra grippy.

I have just put Pilot Sports on at ?148 a pop.

The new Michelin Primacy HP are available in your size and should be around ?150.

You will struggle to beat thier combination of grip and mileage.

Bridgestone RE 050 non runflats are also very good.

Goodyear GS D3's are also a good tyre but they wear more quickly than Michelins and Goodyears IMO.

Don't use Dunllop at all. I use Dunlop. Don't use Dunlop at all. I use Dunlop.

Obviouisly Dunlop RFTs have painted a bad picture for this manufacturer.

Confusing messages, but personal preference.

Are they run flat tyres?

Also, the dunlops I have on the front still have quite a bit left - are there any known problems having two types of tyre? I'm not going to replace the fronts until they are worn...

No, non RFT's.

It is not recommended to mix runflats and non RFT's

Either change all 4 or stick to RFT's

Bridgestone RE050A RFT's are about ?150, Goodyear NCT5 RFT's are about ?140

Personally I always swap front to rear when the rears get down to about 4-5mm, then change all 4 together.

It is always best to have your best tyres on the rear as a front blow out is less disasterous than a rear.

According to German ADAC's test the Michelin PS2's are the most durable tyres.

No RF's on a E60!

Are there any warrenty implications when switching to non RFTs? And this may seem like a daft question, but what do you do if you get a puncture?

No warranty problems, but you would do best to buy a skinny spare, or a can of get you home gloop............or both !

A skinny spare will cost around ?150 from BMW and fit in the well in the boot/trunk when you remove the polystyrene from the tyre well.
