might be due to year of manufacture that you're not getting errors when all seem to

I got my HID fog lights installed on my car which I installed myself for under $200 (capacitors bulbs resistors), there are vendors that sell them pretty cheap here and if you want even cheaper check out ebay.

I am new to this site but to answer your question I have HID foglights and absolutely love them. I live in upstate New York and we have major deer population and hitting one of those at even moderate speed can cause major damage, any ways about a year ago I found online pictures and instructions by some guy in Dubai who said to get 50 watt resistors and putting a relay in wiring and location for resistors he recommended was under headlight assombly on top of aluminum bracket housing washer nossles. Like everybody else I bought led bulbs then tried to add canbus canceling relay, which was ordered from ebay all waste of money. Then last summer got courage to do the project ordered 70-80amp 4 pin relay for about $6 shipping included 2 resistors for about $35 and 55 watt hid factory matching kit in 4300 temprature. It took about 4 hours but at the end of the day I can tell you my light outpout had doubled and I love the look. Besides better visibility has saved me many times from unseen animals trying to force me to put claim with my insurance company "Aminals seem to be working for insurance company". Led lights will give you the look but if you want the Hid kit make sure to get resistors there is no right or wrong way to put them there are only 2 wires and they get connected to each wire going to the fog light plug. Resistors must be installed on aluminum bracket cause they can get very hot and go right threw plastic in few minutes. Relay is the only tricky part but 4 pin installation instructions are available online it's fairly easy. You won't get error messages or flickering. Hope this helps, Good Luck!

What is the purpose of 'relay' in installing HID headlights?
Also, what do those 'resistors' do? If they remove the error message, how is a resistor able to get rid of the error message?

I think the resistor just blocks the signal from traveling back into the system that would cause the error message.
