Gotta admit: for cheap thrills, it is fun to let the car loose in a straight line using the launch control. Rather like a brief roller-coaster ride, in terms of cheap thrills.

It's so much fun that I think it should be listed as a feature in iDrive, under "Entertainment"?

Speaking of cheap: I wonder what are the real effects, in terms of wear and tear? I recall that there is a counter in the system to record your, um, usage of this feature. I wonder if my warranty gets voided if I exceed some counter value?!

There is a discussion over on the m5board about this subject. Two respected members have claimed informed "insiders" at BMW have claimed a limit of 25 before voiding warranty on the E60 M5. Warranty of what was not specified. Other members have countered that there is nothing in the owners manual on this limit hence how would this number be enforceable. More research needed. The M5 of course is a different system than the non M E60/E63 implementation so may not have any application at all to these versions.

When I picked up my 545i, the Service Manager specifically told me that the computer kept track of how many Launch Controls were used - there was some discussion amongst the Service and Sales managers, and they weren't sure if the limit was 4 or 10 after which warranty was void on this car - not good
