You got SMG in your E63?

Yes. I decided that, flawed as it is, it is a step in the right direction and offers more benefits that drawbacks. I miss the interaction (maunal driver since forever, and loved a good, smoothly-executed heel-toe downshift). I think that it really is a matter of taste. I am also looking forward to further enhancements in the SMG line, with the dual-clutch (Audi, Porsche) and single-clutch (planned BMW) enhancements looking good.

The procedure for launching the SMG M3 is different from that of the SMG E60 (actually, I seem to remember that the first SMG M3's didn't have launch control activated -- I don't know if they ever activated it in future years or software versions.)? BTW, I think the M3 and E60 M5 processes are the same.

The process for the E60 is out there on this site somewhere

Launch control is activated simply by:
(1) Disengage DSC completely by depressing DSC button for 5 seconds
(2) Engage Sport shift program (since the E60/E63 does not have a set of programs, just two: Standard and Sport) by depressing the Sport button, just below the shift mechanism
(3) FULLY depress accelerator
... (4) Hold on!

So launch control shifts for you...no manual shifting?

Yes, as long as you keep the accelerator pedal floored...

So is launch control the best way to get the fastest 0-60 time or is a good driving shifting still faster?

Launch control is supposed to optimize acceleration so I imagine the answer is "yes."

How fast is the 0-60 time of SMG in "launch" mode vs. Tiptronic in DS mode vs. manual for a 545i?

I had an opertunity to take my 545 smg to a drag strip last week, but had to decline due to family trip. I was wondering if launch control is the best for fastest 1/8 or 1/4 mile time, with all the wheel spin.

Does anyone Know?
