everytime i use kick down, the gear drops down to 3rd from 6th.
I don't think it does - perhaps you mean it drops from 6th to 3rd?

The purpose of the kickdown is too quickly change from 'cruising' in the most economic gear for your speed to a lower gear which should provide greater torque enabling rapid acceleration.

It is activated by pushing the accelerator hard to the floor past the 'full throttle' resistance point. In my manual it advises drivers to avoid both full throttle and kickdown in the running in period, because the engine will rev to the limit if either are used.

My experience of the kickdown on my 530d is that it is not very closely mapped to the performance of the engine, in that it will drop a couple of gears when activated, letting the engine speed rise to 3500/4000rpm, when the peak torque is available from 2000-3000rpm. In this instance acceleration is actualy slowed by the change down.

Further, the learning 'switching' function of the gearbox, tends to replicate kickdown from cruising speed with any sudden increase in throttle input, by switching from extreme economy to economy mode (or sport to extreme sport in DS). The will activate before you can activate kick down

In the 530d the kickdown is a bit pointless for the reasons described above, but in a large petrol engined car, where the peak torque is close to the redline in each gear, then kickdown will still be very useful.

Kickdown is not available in manual transmissions

You're both correct, the gear drops down TO 3rd FROM 6th //or// the gear drops FROM 6th TO 3rd!!

I'm quite amazed that some people here are not aware how manual transmission works! It might be because 90% of cars in the U.S are automatic, so some people never drive a manual, but just to clarify, there is no such thing as kickdown on a manual transmission, as you control the gears and clutch manually!!

If you were to slam the pedal to the floor in a manual (al-la kickdown), all that would happen is that you would accelerate within the gear that you are in, and if you happened to hit the rev limiter, you have to manually change the gear up using the clutch, and gear selector.

It might be becuase im from the UK and most cars here are manuals, but it's amazing that people are unaware of how it works!

Is it normal when you hit the kickdown, it needs a response time of a half to a full second?!! It is just so annoying that it doesn't respond as fast as i want on my 525xi.
perhaps on lesser models... on the 745li its a missile straight away

Weird thing is the onwer's manual recommends using kickdown during the intial break-in period, but also recommends not fully accelerating. How can you do one without the other?
Hey man biggest BS ever sorry in my manual it says during break in do not use, also they said to me do not use DS before properly broke in... check that, when you use kickdown it lets closer to the redline but still the DS will work so wud not strengthen the engine, meaning will not let it blow it away.

I use kickdown when I have 2-3 lanes in Germany that is where fun begins.

oop's I think I misread the the original post.

It definately goes DOWN in the gears though - otherwise it would be called kickup and be completely crap.

This looks like same words, AVOID use of kickdown ,I've seen in EVERY model year E60, E63 and E90 manual I've read, which is consistent with common sense.
