Basically, kickdown = maximum acceleration. There's a little button behind the gas pedal (for those with auto trannies) Go see for yourself.
Try pushing the pedal all the way down with the engine off (obviously) You'll feel a little resistance, so push it all the way down. This is how kickdown engages when you want to accelerate.
BTW, when you initiate kickdown the computer assumes that you want maximum power and acceleration so any manual upshifts through steptronic will be overriden. The car will upshift automatically at redline.

Is it normal when you hit the kickdown, it needs a response time of a half to a full second?!! It is just so annoying that it doesn't respond as fast as i want on my 525xi.
