I'm pretty sure I heard mine chime with the keys in the ignition, but maybe that was with the door opened! Anyhow I just turn on the radio without the keys and it seems to work fine

Just buy one of these and don't stress over the chime

i have an '06 and still can listen to audio without the key. i just push in the volume button (just like how you would mute the audio) and the radio/cd turns on. i also dont have comfort access and just the old key

Mine doesn't even chime when the key is in the position where it would normally be if the engine was running.
-Put your key into the ignition and turn to position one to turn on electronics [otherwise radio doesn't start];
-Turn on the CD
-Open the door to get out [at which point you should start to hear chiming]
You get no chime when the key is in and the door is opened??????? As for the battery life issue - its not going to kill your battery to run your CD player while you clean your car, trust me!

So - let me get this straight -
