My Ride: On order for November Delivery - 550 !!!! - Currently own 1999 E39 540, sport pkg, premium sound pkg, black on black. Previous owner of 2000 M Coupe, 1996 328is, 1984 633csi, 1982 528e, and wifed owned 1999 528 touring and 2002 525 touring. Looking at buying 545 or 550 in fall of 2005.

When I look at the surface of the logo that's still on there and the condition of the paint, i'd say that it has taken some serious beating from a carwash, a high pressure steamer or even agressive cleaners / polishers or maybe even both of them.
That and a direct hit from a stone may have damaged the logo by causing a crack or openening in it's surface which in it's turn makes the plastic come loose from it's base.

I had a hood emblem peel once on my E39. The dealer said it happens all the time and simply popped a new one on under warranty. Instead of the carwash story, I told people it peeled off because I was driving too fast!
I don't remember if it left me with a "BM" or not...
