No need to worry yet. It might be a minor think, like fuel cap not locked all the way. First go to indy shop and have them read the faults. Check Your battery. If it is not genuine i do not know what company makes batteries for BMW electronics might go crazy sometimes. I had this problem changed battery - problem solved. Let us know what happened and good luck!

if it's the gas cap (i haven't had the car long enough to have to give it gas, only used under a quarter tank so far), will tightening it remove the error, or is that something that has to be reset by a technician on the cpu?

It has to be reset, but dude just go to an Advanced Auto store and they will read, and delete, the code for you for free - why pay an indy shop for this. This will make the service engine soon light turn off - it will come back on if the error isn't corrected, or you might get lucky and it won't. Make sure you write down all the codes it threw, ask the Advanced Auto guy to give them to you. It could be as simple as the gas cap not being tight enough or something worse, you won't know until you have the codes read.

and then buy an OBD-II reader from them for like $30 and you can read and erase the codes yourself next time.

Good luck! I hope its something simple man.

Yep.

A company where I'm a silent partner now already ordered MB's for 2.5 million USD...
Just because BMW is not even trying to help or to solve the issue.

Thanks for the info Iceman.

Before purchase I had researched online and found about this issue and the third party replacement tube; it even came up in a prepurchase conversation I had with an indy shop I found through bimrs.org, but since this is as you state a wear and tear item, it explains their assertion that it was just limited to the 745 model and they had not seen the same issue with the 545.

However, this, the HPFP issues and others lead me to ponder if BMW?s are overrated vehicles?

Thankfully, the aftermarket has fully addressed the issue and fixing the o-ring won't cost $9K anymore. If it does, I feel sorry for that guy.

Same engine!

Even the 750 and the 550 engines ar ebuilt the exact same way and have the same pipe.
Once the engines are old enpough the shops will also have more and more 545's, 750's and 550's.

But 1600$ is still too much for an o-ring.

The local gas station read the error and it's "fuel tank venting" whatever that is. Is that the error for the gas cap? They cleared the error but it will probably just pop right back up again. I guess I need to bring the car to a German auto place.

You might need to replace the fuel cap. Same thing happened to me. I guess system senses different pressure in tank and pops up the alarm. Do not drive!!! Stop the car!!! No driving NEIN!!!

You will be fine nothing major.
