The roads, in general terms, are TERRIBLE!? Holes and cracks deep enough to do damage all over the place!? How do you deal with it?? Why do you put up with it?

Other than the roads, the USA was great - lots of fun had by all!

As one of the other posts noted, the potholes here in Boston are due to the temperature extremes (-0F to +95F). They're always worst at this time of year as the ground thaws, and this year is one of the worst that any of us can remember.

That said, I'm glad you enjoyed our beautiful Boston and New England. But, c'mon back in a couple of months - it'll be even better!!

I used to travel that area up through Maine. This time of year they are plagued with "frost heave" which makes for some pretty rough roads.

I just cry once in a while. The roads in Los Angeles are the worst, not because of the weather but because the city and state is almost broke.

YA LA is horrible now! It just gets worse and worse and no one has the money to repair it decently...

The roads up here help to keep your reflexes honed! Nothing like the sport suspension and active steering when you notice that you are 1 second from a classic New England pot hole impact.

Funny you should mention that. I was just talking with a friend about how the population of LA is suppose to double in the next decade or two yet I a haven't heard of any new proposed freeways. My understanding is that it takes a decade to build a new freeway. What is going to happen in the future when traffic literally comes to a grinding halt?

Ya I always talk about the roads with my friends here in NJ.. let me tell you you see so many pot hole patches its incredible... I haven't been to Boston or LA but if your roads are worse then what we got in NJ then you must have man size crators!! I am really worried about puttin my rims back on because this winter the roads have gotten the worst I've ever seen.. I think they should just repave every road in NJ... O that would be heavenly

Mart,

The full explanation on the roads is that at the end of winter, the northern tier states end up with horrible potholes resulting from the intense cold winters that fluctuate with mild spells and produce road heave like someone else mentioned.

As spring arrives, the road crews go out and have to fix all of them, and by early summer, most places are back to usable roads once again in the northern states.

The south does not have this problem, I grew up in Florida, and the roads are great, never changing from season to season.

Other cities like LA don't have the weather excuse. But most of where you were would be back to normal by may or june.

I have a sports suspension and wheels that I just put back on after winter tyres/tires and I try to remember where the potholes are until they get fixed in the coming weeks!

Glad you liked the trip otherwise. Sorry for the roads!!!!!

For the Canadains onboard here, do you end up with potholes by the end of winter?

Thanks for the input fellas. I know understand the signs at the side of the road that said "Caution - Frost Heaves". I was thinking "What the f*** is frost heave?" - now I know...

:-)

Oh yeah, we get potholes. I was driving around Toronto yesterday and thinking to myself that this year's crop is about the worst ever.

The old joke is that on our roads there are two seasons - winter and construction. Both are bad for driving.

Yeah, that may be true, but you guys go like a bat out of hell on the queensway (is it 401?) around toronto!!!!!!!!! I wish we had places where we could do that too!

There must be some lenient cops around Toronto when you can find some good road surface. All our cops are out looking for tiny speeding infractions instead of keeping the cities safe
