Hey its been a three week lay off from the forum.
Two weeks I spent on vacation in South Africa with the family, whilst there I drove a friends 530i Sport in black, well in Johannesburg this needs to be 4.5L to get London type performance the altitude really saps performance it seemed to me. Plenty of fives were on show in Cape Town, Jo,berg & Sun City, and being right hookers they were almost identical to UK cars.

Then I immediately flew off to LA on business, whilst there I hired a 530i from a company close to LAX, immediate inpressions were the small detail changes to lights and the horrible inserts in the rear bumper where the refecters are on European cars. The standard wheels also seemed different to European cars and the Air-Con was better than our standard offering. Fives were everywhere so BMW must love California, I also noticed plenty of cars with chromed rims which you never see in the UK (their were plenty of Mini Coopers & Cooper S cars on show for those interested)
The biggest pleasure in both South Africa & LA was the huge drop in fuel prices over the UK, boy do we get ripped off by Gordon Brown.

Could I ask what car hire company hires 5er's and was it expensive?
(If the company wasn't paying for it that is)

Easily circumvented for around $20 and a trip to the dealer

If you come to LA 5 to 10 years ago, we used to have more cars with chromed wheels, the trend actually quiet down a lot. LA don't rain much like other places, so we can keep the chrome wheel clean for longer time.

Does anyone know WHY the reflecters aren't allowed in America - I can't think of ANY reason why not - they just make the car easier to see.

Thanks for the report! The non-reflectors in usa is almost history. Most dealers are offering them if you ask them @buy time!

It is some issue with not being approved by our Department of Transportation (DOT). What is funny is that you will see the reflectors on the previous 3 series. Maybe BMW did not feel like dealing with the hassles.

Most people who are in-tune with the cars and this forum will change them out (probably only a fraction of the 5 owners) so it allows some of us to be unique. I ordered them from the dealer when I ordered my car and they installed them prior to delivery.

It has gotten better - originally the cutouts where black, so if you had anything but a black car, they stuck out like a sore thumb. Now, BMW is color coding them to the car, so they are less noticable.
