without warning, it would just not start. Everything was normal in the cabin and there were no errors--the engine would just not crank. Like there was no power to the starter. Sometimes it would happen and then start after 2-5 retries. occasionally I would have to retry for 10-15 minutes before it would start. Then it would go days to weeks without any problem. I started to get more frequent. I took it to an indie shop and the only thing they found was 9 errors on the starter (about the number of no start episodes). They replaced it 2 weeks ago (after market warranty paid the $1300+). No problems since, but I am still holding my breath every time I hit the start button.

They said the starter is buried deep under the car.

Well it happened again--so it was not the starter. It is like I dont have the clutch pushed in--maybe that is the key to the problem. Hmmm. I will have to take it back tot he shop.

I replaced my ISM last weekend and all is well. No issues thus far.

Cheers!

IVM is on passenger side (right) in E-box under plenum cover.
As an aside, this box can fill with water if drain that redirects rain water from that area gets plugged, damaging this module.

Thanks

I replaced my ISM about 2 weeks ago (07 550i), after having random no starts, an occasional stall while sitting at a red light, and at one point the car went into limp mode (felt like she was running on 4). Post replacement of the ISM, the car has been flawless, whereas before it was acting up on a bi-daily basis.
I was thrilled at finding this needle in the haystack before replacing the starter, etc.

Sudden loss of power, it felt like the engine was running on 3 cylinder, accompanied by vibration and "increased emmisions" warning and high fuel consumption. I changed the ISM oh three weeks ago and it's been trouble free plus it was a easy change.

I went ot replace the ISM in my 2004 530i. I found what looks like the DME passenger side ebox. Other model BMW pics I have seen show the ISM sitting right there. I do not see mine at all. Is it inside the car behind the CD changer maybe?

Based on the diagram linked in the forums here...

A6009, X60095, X60094, X60093, X60092, X60091

It looks like my ISM has been relocated, or I don't know what I am looking at...

ISM hasn't been reloacted, just know what you're look at
Look at the TIS above and it says E63

OK, thanks. Then where is it located on an E60 I have been searching and searching for this. I even checked to see if the ISM fits in that slot on mine which is shown in the picture, and it does so I figured it had been relocated.

The diagram above doees say it is E63 but it was linked from the E60 model, so maybe I was wrong to assume it was the same. I am lost at this point and the next step will be to have it towed to my local Indy if I can't get this figured out.
