:'( This morning I went to wash my 5, I opened the drivers side I saw that the inside body rubber molding had worn away and was split and torn.........holy crap, I thought, I only have 11K on the car, this shouldn't have happened. The molding is hollow, hell I remembers on some of my other cars they were solid rubber and lasted forever..........HEY BMW... CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP, WHATS UP WITH THAT.

Now when I have it replaced, I really do hope that the replacement is not just another hollow molding which will wear out in another 11K miles. I AM NOT A HAPPY CAMPER.

Which part is deteriorating? like the top or the bottom or side of that hollow tube? Are you or passengers rubbing aginst it a lot when getting in and out of the car?

Mines like freaken changed color... its not ripping or anything but its like its been out in the sun and has changed color!

The driver's side of the molding, I don't believe I'm rubbing it when entering or exiting the car, but hell, this should not happened, next month (October) I'll have the car 1 year. I'm really pissed about it. You pay 50K + and within a year the inside molding are tearing up. As I said in my first Post "BMW .....CHEAP....CHEAP.....CHEAP

I have a small tear in the rubber seal on the bottom of the driver's side door, right about in the middle of the door. I'm going to replace all the seals as per the dealer's bulletin on squeaking door seals.

Took my car to the dealer to have the molding replaced and I was told I have to wait because they are out of stock for that item, it appears a lot of owners have flocked to their dealers to have them replaced. I'm hoping I get the molding quickly. I hate opening that door and seeing it split right down the middle. By the way I asked them to replace all of them and I was told only one needed replacement. The build date of my 5 was 9/04 and I picked the car up the latter part of 10/05, probally one of the first 05's made.

So I'll have to wait for that infamous call that my part is in............who would have thunk it.....

I do agree that the rubber shouldn't deteriate this fast but the hollow rubber are there so that when we close our door you would hear a big noise. Think about it, if the door molding were solid rubber when you close the door the car will feel like a car from the 70's.

The door moulding is really a gasket that seals against wind, rain, etc. Most modern door gaskets have a hollow section to make them softer so they seal better.

I had the same problem with my E39. I am tall and have the seat adjusted far back. Its almost impossible to get in or out of the car without rubbing against the moulding.
