LOL! OK, he was a fluke.

But I still stand behind AWD over RWD in the snow. Afterall, there was a reason you were in your X5 over your 550/E39 540, right? You preferred having the AWD. I've been in 2 accidents in RWD cars going down I-70 to Vail, both cars of which, had snow tires and good drivers.
I am with C on this one. AWD cars run circles around 2WD cars in the winter, even with snow tires. Especially in the mountains it wouldn't even be close. I really can't believe this is even being discussed.

JB, There is no way a rwd vs awd is better in the snow no question! In a straight line far superior ! going around corners( if the driver knows what they are doing) better. But living here ,and driving every winter weekend to Whistler since I was 16 I can tell you that virtually all the cars I see off the road are 4/all wheel drive. You can't discount the ability of a good driver, whatever the set up is .

Cheers

Agreed, west550, but usually that is because the 4/AWD pilots overestimate their vehicle's ability to stay on course, thus they "push the envelope" too hard. Most 2WD know they are not invincible and drive accordingly.

I have lived in Lake Tahoe, there are streets you just can't get up unless you have AWD or 4x4, you sit there spinning your tires in a 2WD because the incline is just too much, unless you have chains on, even then its still a bitch. They don't plow all the streets. In the mountains AWD or 4x4 is a must, at least it is in Tahoe. I guess the World Rally Championship should just start using 2WD because AWD is irrelevant.

I'd also like to add that my BMW handles better than my truck/SUV in the snow. Makes sense though. Lower center of gravity and closer to the ground, so less chance of top heavy weight shifting the car out of it's line through a turn. One of the reasons Audi and Subaru have such great reputations for snow traction.

But hey Bimmerturn - You should contact the Audi and Subaru engineers and let them know that they've been wasting their time all these years. You've just figured out that RWD BMW's handle the best. I'm sure they'd love to hear your theories behind your findings.
You know, I am fed up with people that will only accept their own findings and experience and there is no weight for anybody else's. You have your experience and I have mine. I have driven in the north east for over 20 years and I have also heard all the horror stories about the BMW with RWD which kept me from buying the car for the longest time. I have stated my experience with snow tires compared to other cars that I have owned, if you don't like it then tough.

BTW, I don't race or drive aggressively in bad weather with snow and ice. I maintain control and drive very safely as apposed to people who think by having AWD then they can drive any which way they like with disregard to their own safety and other's safety.

So, you didn't have snow tires on your AWD cars?
