What is mentioned above here about the IBS is correct.

This is asmall sensor incoroprated in the battery negative cable of all BMWs of 2004 up.

When this goes out, it wil,l actually drain the cars battery and also cause a code which says : Increased Battery Drain \ Discharge.


The way to check this is to disconnect the sensor (small two pin blue connector at the battery) and charge the car overnight. Codes should be gone, and all your settings should be preserved

This is also covered by BMW limited warranty.

Ask your service manager for the bulletin.

 

If you don't register the battery, depending on what capacity the new battery is, it might not get charged properly by the car. But if you get a battery with similar capacity, it won't matter.

 

I just wanted to let you all know that after installing a new battery from Kragen and after a couple of days all the weirdness that was going on disappeared. I had thought that the new battery didn't fix it because it didn't fix it right away.

 

Let me see here if someone is pro in this what i'm about to ask.

A friend of mine needed help with some battery coding in his e60 535 2006 due to "high rate of battery discharge" The battery was dead and he couldn't even start the car. The keyfob even got stuck once. This was a oem 90Ah battery.

He went to BMW and bought another oem battery, but this time a 110Ah battery. I helped him out and retrofitted this new bigger battery, coded it to VO, then CAS LMA. Recoded the new CAS and it's values over to cas again to get it to show 110Ah in inpa aswell

And aslo in inpa DDE6 (M57TOP) then reset IBS and confirm battery replacement. Got OK on both!

Now a week later, the message show up again "High rate of battery discharge" ?? Something i noticed was that i couldn't connect the MPM thru inpa, it should work. But could it be MPM that does this?

Or maybe IBS? Any suggestion would be great. Need somekind of a start to get thru what i might could be.

Alternator may not be charging properly; resulting in draining the battery.

 

Yes, thought that aswell. But that's simple to see if it's not charging the battery enought, inpa can show it.

Or you could do it manually by checking the current on battery.

What is a good value? Bout 14Volts? anything under 12 must be bad.

 

The thing is:

I tried to read Micro power module in his car with inpa "NO RESPONSE FROM CONTROLUNIT"
Which is strange. They took MPM out of prod in 2007 so a 2006 should have it.

We tried MPM on my 2004. No prob. Maybe it could be MPM but do not know for sure.

 

To make your life easy its always good to get an identical battery when the old one goes bad (if you don't have INPA, ISTA and NCS expert).

Even if you do have an identical battery you need to register it to tell the alternator how to charge the "new" battery properly (and not over charge it).

However, you have a parasitic drain problem that has nothing to do with registration and coding the battery.

Check out all the threads on e60 parasitic drain and all the potential solutions. You can identify the drain running a few tests.
