Have your friend take a look in Edmunds.com.... the BMW 5-series was voted the "Consumer's Most Wanted Vehicle in the Sedan Under $45,000" category for the last four years running!

I've been a Toyota/Lexus guy for many years, but one test drive in a 530i won me over. The driving experience was like no other. Long story short, a new 2005 530i is sitting in the garage next to my wife's Lexus.
