Wow. Lots of different opinions here. Well thx for everyones input. I said I was leaning 95% one way and I'm now 100%. I will stick with my 5 as I learned that the M3 doesnt have the SMG transmission and as much as i always wanted to get an M3 out of my system, this car would be an everyday driver for me as i already have a sunday car. It just seems to make more sense to keep the 5. It's more practical and I have a 2nd child on the way. Not that a 2nd child on the way has any bearing on this but it's just probably not the smartest move I could make right now. Thx again for everyones input as I value fellow E60 owners opinions greatly.

Good decision - I sold my e46 M3 and got the E60. Whilst obviously not as lunatic, the E60 is a different generation car, and is better in almost every sense than my old (and much loved) M3.

I had an e46 M3 for 3 years and loved it. My wife hated it. It is a stiff riding high strung performance car. It is not nearly as comfortable as the e60, nor does it offer all the amenities. I'm not sure I would want the e90 M3 the first year of production, and don't really think the e46 will be "outdated" soon. The positive about the e46 M3 is they bugs are pretty much worked out, and it is one hell of a fun car. I just found there were not that many occasions I could fully utilize the M3's capabilities. The 550 is almost as fast and has a lot more torque. What the 550 lacks is the precision handling of the M3.

So if you plan on keeping the car for 3 years you could then move up to the e90M3 after 2 years of production.
