iDrive Reboot!

My Ride: 2008 535i (Canada); Deep Sea Blue Metallic; Creme Leather; M Sport Package; Premium Package; Nav Package.
Yesterday when I started my car, the iDrive system failed to boot properly. It displayed the opening "BMW" screen, and stayed that way for at least a minute (long enough to drive a few blocks). I was thinking about pulling over and restarting the car (rebooting it manually 
) when the screen went blank, and it rebooted on its own.
There must be a watchdog timer (common in embedded systems) that resets the iDrive computer if it doesn't boot properly.
Anybody else ever see this?

Still hapenning for me from time to time even though I have CIP 17.1.
I should upgrade to 19 later this month.

I've only had my '06 530xi a couple of months. How do you know when you need to have a software update? Through the grapevine? Does the dealer send you a notice?

I have seen this a few times. iDrive stuck on "BMW" screen for couple of mins. Radio will not start but PDC will ping (no picture) when appropriate. :

That happened to me once, it got stuck for a minute then rebooted on it's own. I hope it is not a recurring problem.

Mine blanked out on me on the highway after about an hour, nav and music stopped, came back after a while. I have also had it blank out on startup. Appointment Monday for update of CIP and first oil change.
