This is correct and, since the "inferior" MOST-bus interface for the iPod did not require use of the analog port to support DRM-protected music, I can't help but wonder why BMW couldn't come up with a better way of doing this.

There is a sound quality issue when you use the BMW Y cable. The ID3 info (Artist, song, album names etc) gets pushed through the USB port, but the sound is split from the ipod and pushed to the analog aux input. This is how they get around the DRM issue.
As other people have discovered, there is a capacitor on the AUX input that cuts out a lot of the low frequencies and gives everything a bit of a muffled sound. The aux input is protected from high level inputs blowing the sound system, but it also hinders sound quality. When you use the ipod in disk mode (just using a regular ipod cable) its a full digital transfer to the sound system.
The downside to this, as stated before, is that you lose the ability to play DRM protected music (ie, just about anything you buy from the itunes store), and the playlists you make in itunes will not show up. You can get around both, but that might be a discussion for another day
The easiest way to hear the difference is listen to a favorite song on CD and then on the ipod. You'll be surprised.

Sorry to bring this back up but how is the playlist issue gotten around when using the iPod in disk mode please?
Also, is the Y cable included on UK cars? If not, how much would the $tealer want for one?
Cheers!
Ian.

I actually think the most bus version does use the analog port; Apple does not license their DRM technology to anyone. The analog port is part of the dock connector. The difference with th 6FL is that they split it out into a USB interface and an analog interface so that it can also accommodate USB devices and conventional aux-in applications.

So much for that "Digital Experience": http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2004/jun/21bmw.html

Nope, I didn't get the Y cable with the car. I've just used the white Apple cable and while this doesn't allow me to use playlists, it does allow me to sort by album or artist name. That's if the MP3 tags are up to scratch. Some files just won't play though, can't find what's causing this yet..... Don't think it's DRM....
