iDrive just crapped out
Friday afternoon I stopped to fill up with gas. When I got back in the car and started it up, iDrive was no more. Dead dead dead. Black screen. No Nav, no radio, no nothin'.
I happened to be about a mile from a BMW center so I dropped in and showed it to them. My SA wasn't there, but the SA I talked to said he'd seen it happen a few times before and that they would "probably have to replace the CCC". I've done some searches here but I still don't quite understand what that entails.
Here is my bottom-line question: Is there any chance they might replace some part that would result in me being able to get bluetooth? My car is a 1/2004 build so I am BT-free at the moment.
Thanks,
Mark

- when my iDrive first crashed, the diagnosis process they made at the dealer, told them to replace the whole CCC
- now, with intermittent crashes, the diagnosis process issues no specific problem - so the only thing they do is reprogram the whole car
To the bottomline of your question; if your car was BT free, there is a great chance it will stay BT free.... unless you pay for it of course: when I got a new progman on my car, well, there still was no BT, as my guess is they would have to add some kind of hardware...
Good luck with CCC replacement !!!

I recenty had an Idrive upgrade (software version 26) to enable my ipod kit to be installed. This caused my Idrive to intermittently not start. I took it back to my BMW dealer and they had a look. Their was no 'fault' record in the system anywhere and the only thing that I noticed was when the Idrive wasn't working I could here my indash CD drive contantly hunting.
The upshot was they put my car thru the upgrade process again and since then it hasn't faulted. My pick is they will have a go at re-programming the car.
Keep us in the loop.
cheers

I see, so this problem could be the result of the software upgrade I received several weeks ago to correct the transmission slam issue? They did the 2-1 Tip In Retrofit back at the end of July and that involves a complete vehicle program upgrade.
Thanks for the info!

This is possibly fixed by reloading the software but it is also possible that the prior upgrade could have caused a fault in the CCC which requires replacing the CCC.
The first step is usually to reload the software. If the problem persists, they will have to look elsewere.
While this type of problem is rare, it is not unheard of.

The only other thing I can think of is the Micro Power Module (MPM) in the trunk failing (or getting wet, etc.)

Rudy - Thanks for the links. That's very interesting and seems to apply. Except for the wet part. And I never got the burnt smell.
Jonathan - I did not have any problems with iDrive prior to the upgrade. But, like I said, that upgrade was a month ago. This is my daily driver. Seems odd that it would suddenly go out after all that time.
I guess I'll find out on Tuesday...
Thanks again all.

Even though you didn't get it wet and it didn't emit any odor, it might've still failed. Also, you might want to double check all the connections to the unit -- maybe something came loose?
That used to happen to me whenever I changed the light settings out of adaptive when I turned the car off. But it has never happened again since, because I turn the lights to the adaptive setting before turning off the car.
