A little of everything on this one. I had the symptom, thought it was this:

SUBJECT
CCC - CID Switches Between BMW Banner and Blank Screen
MODEL
E90, E91 (3 Series) with SA 609 Car Communication Computer (CCC)
E60, E61 (5 Series) with SA 609 Car Communication Computer (CCC)
E63, E64 (6 Series)
SITUATION
The customer may complain that the Central Information Display (CID) switches between the BMW banner and a blank screen (resets). One of the following fault codes is stored:
CID FC "A468 LVDS cable break"
CCC-BO FC "A3E4 fault in file system"
CAUSE
CCC Failure
PROCEDURE 1 (CID FC A468)
On a customer complaint basis, submit a PuMA case to the Electrical Group along with FASTA data.
But turned out a PROGMAN upgrade did the trick with NO CCC replaced. No one answer, but get it to the dealer.
Also for the cold theory we have this:

Hi,
Don't know if this will help, have to tried disconnecting the battery (-) lead for at least 10 minutes.
I think you'll loose the date, time and maybe have to initialise the Active Steering, but it may reboot the system and clean out any gremlins.

As far as the spontaneous reboot that papereyes experienced, cobradav's post looks pretty on target but keep in mind that earlier versions of software also had an issue with the CCC simply bombing and locking/rebooting itself. If it happens often at low temperatures, it's likely that the DVD drive is failing (per cobradav's post) but if it happens randomly, you might need a software upgrade...

Maybe I'm wrong but it looks as if papereyes thinks katheikia was kidding around about with his comment but in reality, E60's with Nav do have a control-alt-delete function built into the system to reboot the iDrive system without restarting the car.

as always with this great forum, theres a great wealth of knowledge,
As the car is still under warranty and only got it less than 30 days ago, i'm thinking of bringing it in to the dealer, as I would like to know what CIP version get an upgrade on the CIP as well.
if no joy i'll be ctrl alt del -ing
