i recently read a review of luxury-sport sedans in car and driver. again, the iDrive was bashed. what are they talking about? iDrive is awesome! it's positioned right where i relax my hand and i effortlessly scroll thru stations or whatever.
reviews like that piss me off because they may drive it for a day or 2 and tear it apart. i've had it for a week and LOVE it. in the article, i think the infiniti had an iDrive wanna-be, but i think it was placed on the console so you would have to reach for it. that defeats the whole purpose.
i can do anything i want with the controls and never change my comfortable driving position.

iDrive kicks ass and is a definite plus for these cars. i feel foolish for letting these morons make me second guess getting my first bimmer.

I coudn't agree with you more. I love Idrive! I have almost 19,000 miles on my car and I couldn't imagine ever getting another car with out this kind of system. Once again BMW leads the field.

you can control the Ininiti system from the steering wheel... iDrive is good.... but the Infiniti system is better, much faster.... if you compared the time required to perform functions on each, the person in the Infiniti would run circles around the person using iDrive... no question about it....

Actually, you can't control that many of the Infiniti functions from the steering wheel. For most functions, you have to reach up to that abortion-looking thing in the center dash.

With IDrive, you can control the same amount of functionality from the steering wheel buttons, but don't have to reach for the mouse (and in the BMW the steering wheel buttons are programmable). Plus, I just can't get past that cheap looking non-finished wood the M45 dash is covered with.

How can any of us ever live without iDrive again, it's like driving a car without zenon lights...

I will never ever ever drive a car without it.? I believe it is the cars best feature.? Idiots who bash Idrive just plain do not have the patience to change.? It took me about an hour to figure it out.? I am glad you like it.? You must have a brain.

I totally agree. These magazine reviewers had me dreading iDrive, but we just picked up a sweet CPO 530i and it took about 15 minutes to really learn the interface. Like others have said, I can't imagine not having that level of control over my car ever again. The 530i is my wife's car and I currently have a 330i. If I get an E90, I'll have to get NAV so I can have iDrive--it's great!

It's kind of like all the people who used to complain about the hot/cold air mix dial for the fresh air vents on earlier (E39, E46, etc.) Bimmers--if these people would just learn to use the systems, they wouldn't complain about them--I always worried that the dial would go away because BMW would get sick of people complaining about it...I'm glad to see that not only has it not gone away, it's become a key-programmable option with iDrive on the E60s.

I have not seen the Infiniti system but I have seen the Navigation and controls of the Honda (Acura) RL. complicated to use and some implementations like Bluetooth phone are clearly infereior. Between my programmable steering wheel buttons and the voice commands at hand there is very litle that I cannot do without taking both hands off the wheel.

Parked ventilation settings
Change CDs
Change Radio stations
Change tracks on a CD
redial a call
scroll through the phoen book
dial a number
dial a name

But frankly having a 6spd my right hand is on the shifter most of the time so I don't mind spinning the puck once in a while.

that's true, you hit the button on the dash for what you want, then navigate through the menus (up and down) using the steering wheel and make changes and selections...

you can't navigate idrive from the steering wheel.... aside from a couple things, like making a phone call from the address book and so forth...

the buttons on the bmw steering wheel are programmable, BUT, that is pretty limited, you can set them for just a few functions...

I've used both systems quite a bit..... I'm not saying either is perfect, but if you compare how long it takes, and number of steps, clicks, rolls to perform functions, from changing settings to inputing navigation addresses..... it's much faster and easier with the Infiniti system....
