I get the signal strength indicator with my Motorola Razr. I have never seen the AC setting icons and don't recall ever seeing the little letter icon
And I also get a picture of a little phone to the left of the antenna looking thing. So, there is a little phone, an antenna and signal strength bars.

I think the little phone to the left of the antenna is the missed call indicator. I have Verizon with a razr v3c, and the little phone goes away when I clear the missed calls menu. The other icons I have are the antenna and the signal bars.

I think the signal bars have to do with the phone, not the cellular provider. I have two phones on Cingular, one shows the bars, one doesn't...
To show the software is not consistent on this - My AT&T Treo 650 showed the bars - my new Verizon Treo 650 does not! I think they do this to keep us guessing!

Yes the phone picture is the missed calls indicator.

That's an old screen shot from a very early version of the software.

You are correct that circle #1 deals with the a/c. The individual vent settings would display there if they were overidden off of automatic. I can't remember but I think they don't show up like that anymore (I always use automatic so I can't recall what happens.) I'm sure someone else will add further detail as to whether or not those still work on some cars.

You are correct that circle #2 is used when a new SMS is received but I think it only works with the hard-wired CPT9000 phone.

You are correct that circle #3 is a signal strength indicator for the phone. It works with many BT phones but there are some that don't. My Nokia 6230 does not show signal, only the first "antenna" picture (with no bars to the right of it.)
Accurate info

Yup, the phone icon is for missed calls, the envelope icon is for an unread SMS messages (on the CPT9000) and the triangle icon is for roaming.

I wonder what it would look like if you were roaming while having a missed call and an unread SMS?

Hmm, I will have to check that. I think it is always there.

The signal strength bars are a function of the phone. More specifically, they are a function of the bluetooth stack implemented by the phon maker. For them to show up, the bluetooth stack in the phone needs to be capable of sending signal strength.
