i was on my way to work this morning, on a call on the bluetooth, and out of nowhere the idrive went dead. i couldn't play cd's, nav obviously wasn't working, bluetooth quit, the voice activation wouldn't work, and i even saw a light on my instrument panel (where time and date normally is) that said (i think), "SES," and had like a no smoking X over it and in the corner of that X was the picture of a telephone.

when i could pull over, i restarted the car and idrive was up and running, but i don't know if this could be a freak incident or is a bad sign? does anyone know? also, any idea on how much longer the CCC might last me, if indeed it is crashing? thank you.

No idea how much longer it'll last you. But it will probably die. Mine did that a couple of times then died completely within a year. Replaced it and much happier now. The iDrive cutting off happens, you can try to see if your dealer can tell you if you have the latest software for your car, which might help and it's a lot cheaper than even a used CCC unit.

My Idrive freezes up sometimes when I start, and i have to reboot it. I think it is going out, I have asked my SA for this and he told me its the CCC. So I'm keeping a close watch on the CIC retrofit thread if my CCC goes it might be time for an upgrade.

yeah, but ivan says the same thing. it sounds like this could happen for quite some time before the unit gives way completely?

how long has yours been "wonky," ivan?

Hello. My CCC iDrive unit is freezing. It's related to the temperature and time usage.

e.g.

Ambient temperature 15C. The unit starts to be choppy in 2 hours.
Ambient temperature 30C. The unit starts to be choppy in 45 minutes.

It also depends on how much i am using the unit. Not touching anything vs. using the bluetooth also significantly lowers the time the unit is usable.

The choppines/freezing is mostly annoying because the sound goes of for a while, then restarts. The unit itself does not reboot or anything. Just continues after few seconds where it ended. The controls of iDrive is lagging like hell at these points.

Assuming all of this i suggest like the CCC iDrive component is overheating. It's CPU, memory banks or whatever. I saw that there's a cooling fan installed behind the CCC unit on the blueprints. Anyone experienced similar problem. Do you think adding some coolers, applying thermal paste or replacing the fan could be of any help?

Thanks.

Well, for one thing, they don't make new units anymore. BMW has switched over the the CIC instead. Only remanufactured units are available now.
I got mine for $650 shipped from these guys, then I went to a local indy shop that nomis_nehc actually recommended. All totaled they installed my CCC, a new TCU, and my Aux input for a grand total of $1100 including parts.
