Dear Shebs,
You are driving a E60 with the 2.2 litre M54B22 engine.
It should not consume any oil!
I have heard about some problems with the new N52 engine but not with the M54.
I have had three cars (E46 325Ci, E39 525iA and E60 525iA) with the M54 and none
of the have consumed any oil.
The '99 320Ci I had was the the M52B20TU engine and the car didn't consume any oil either!

Thanks for your input. You have now given me further proof that yhere is something wrong with my engine. Your experience with three M54 engines shows that it is impossible that the oil consumption in my engine is normal.

E60 520i
up to first service (30.000 km) no oil consumption at all.
upgrade software at 38.000 km new version...many new problems...
now after changing the software next day after 100 km i got a signal for low oil level. I go back to service and tey asked me if i think they steal it (pump it out)?????? They gave me 2liters os Castrol TXT LL01 3-40 (this oil is recomended and used in my car from begining)
Now I have 50000 km amd in 10.000 km I add about 3 times a full litre. So if I'm pretty shure that on service made failure on regular service or on the second service when they upgrade software.
I'm now waiting for BMW answer from 14.november.
I must say that I drive normaly...fast on highway but newer over 5000rpm. 90% are higways (140 - 160km/h)
Also after upgrade software my car is accelerating much better and consumption of gas is also for 1 liter up???
I do not know but I'm a little disapointed with the BMW service!!! I alreay give a claim to BMW Germany...
I hope you will solve your problems

No,
added 1 quart at 10,000 miles.
I assume it related to break-in.

I had my car today for a sotfware update (recieved update 19.2)
I talked a good while with my service guy, and this tred in mind, I asked him about the oil consumption.
He said that the car should NOT GO the whole service intervall (about 24.000 km) without adding oil!
The told me that the oil lamp would warn in good time, and then one should add one half to one litre of oil.
The factory oil is Castrol 0-40W.
So lets see what happens, as I earier told you, I have not ever seen the oil lamp burning in any of my BMW's.
