The MkII and MkIII Navs in the E39 and E53 could be turned off. LCDs don't take much to kick on if needed. Just think about your LCD monitor for your computer. They will take some time to fully warm but it's not likely a noticable difference in this application. That said I don't think I ever really turn mine off in the E39.

They dont even need to actually turn the lcd off, just set the brightness down to the lowest setting, because if you do this manually it all looks nice and dark but is too much of a faff to do everytime you just want it dark.
