Someone must be listening -- I've said all along that the one thing I'd like to see added to the HUD is a gear indicator (tach optional).

Looks like they may be listening...

With the tach on the HUD, do you think there would be room for NAV information? Perhaps a shift light would be in order.

I don't have SMG, and was wondering if you can exceed redline.

You can probably select things for the HUD. If you are using nav, you probably would give up the tach, etc.

As far as the SMG, there is still a rev limiter to prevent you from going past red-line. It works much better than the one on the E39 -- it modulated the fuel and holds the revs AT red-line instead of cutting fuel abrubtly and dropping the revs below red-line.

Anyone else think that HUD picture looks a bit photoshopped? What's the source of the piccy?

I agree it looks a little fake. I think it's a simulated image -- just like the early pics of the current HUD that BMW released before production.

Either way, here is the source where I snagged the pic...

From what I've read on the E60M5, that is a special HUD mode that the driver can activate that's separate from the normal HUD mode (where you can selectively display speed/nav/cruise/check control data). Now, I don't know if the special "M" HUD mode data is changeable, but I don't think so, based on what I've read.

When you select M Sport mode you automatically get the rev counter and gear indicator. The rev arc starts flashing when you reach shiftingpoint.

You can not have nav info at the same time.

If they had that option on HUD when I got my SMG I would have gotten it. With SMG you lose the tactile feel of which gear you are in through hand/arm position on the gear shift. I am always looking at the tach and gear indicator on the instrument panel at the lower 1,2 gear and upper 5,6 gear ratios.

My heart aches for such a system. I would really like to be in charge of what is displayed in the HUD screen.
