In Washington State, I paid $75 for tabs last March.
Cal
I want to be your neighbour. I just paid somehwere between $200 - $300 in Seattle. When they still had the monorail tax it was close to $800(about 2 years ago)

For others out there in the world, Seattle is in Western Washinton where Cal is from.

I wonder if some of the people reporting high figures are including the sales tax you have to pay to get your initial tags?
Not me, here in Georgia (US) they charge what they call an Ad Valorem tax every year with your tag renewal, it is based, as the name states, on the value of the car. I will have to pay approx. 300USD this year. In reality the tag renewal is only 20 bucks but on top of that you have to add this "According to Value" tax which is pretty unpopular around here.

Here in Missouri, I just spent $58.28 to renew for two years. I think it's $30 for one year. But, in the St. Louis area you have to get a $36 safety/emissions inspection every time (most other areas are exempt from the emissions test), so it's cheaper to get two years at a time. So, I guess my true total is $94.28 with the mandatory inspections.

Nope, that is on top of the sales tax. In Colorado, you pay property tax for the vehicle, 2.1% of the MSRP for the 1st year, 2% for the 2nd year, 1.5% for the 3rd year.

It was primarily your $1200 fee that I was thinking of, not the $350 range others mentioned. I was close to $2G with initial sales tax + tags when I bought my car last year. We also have to pay property tax on our cars every year, but the scale is somewhat different. It's still well over $1G per year on a car like ours.

In NC, it's:

$28 renewal
+$30 emissions inspection
$58

It's a $250 fine if you're 90+ days late paying it!!

In NJ it was $72. A bargain given our high property, sales and income taxes (all told I pay enough for some immigrant's salary )

It's actually cheap considering many other states charge by value of the car and it can run into the hundreds of dollars I better shut up before the state gets any ideas
Yeah you pay enough to keep me in my 545
