Took me about five minutes as well, even if it is slow to use. Although I still haven't worked out how to turn off the directions once I've turned them on.

If you have a nav with perspective view, you can cancel the destination from a button on the left side of the map screen. In addition to that (newer) method, you can do it through the menu system:

I really love idrive and the many options it offers to configure your car the way you want.
It took me a few minutes getting to know the system, and then another couple of minutes for the shortcuts (LCI, business nav)

Still, 3 potential idrive improvements for me:

1) The 8 programmable buttons can be used for phone, nav & audio. I would love them to be really configurable: Any idrive screen/menu please! Hopefully this will come with a future firmware update... (this has been discussed before here)

2) If I scroll through a MP3 DVD, moving the knob to the left should result in 1 directory up instead of no reaction.

3) Idle screen should give me water temp, oil temp, battery voltage etc etc (this has been discussed before on this forum as well)

There are a couple of other very minor improvements possible, but overall I think idrive is a very good system. Press-people complaining about it are probably either very old or they did not want to invest more than 20 seconds of their time on idrive.

I think it's the second button down from the top. It looks like an arrow pointing Eastward at a small circle...

Thank you and danke!
10 minutes since I surf this board. I love reading reviews and posts slamming I-Drive. Unintuitive, slow and crude.

I like it and the knob is exactly where it should be. I dig no clutter on my dash and touch screens are not the future. No reaching. I miss it every time I'm driving another car, at least a pre-2005 luxury car.

iDrive isn't at all complicated - it is, however, slow, buggy and it is reasonably unintuitive. It has improved over the years, but it has a long way to go to match the usability of some other systems. BMW deserves credit as it's a great concept, but it's let down by the appalling execution. Much of the criticism of iDrive was (and remains) entirely justified. FWIW I'm a technology partner in a professional services firm - I'm far from IT illiterate, and have always been an early adopter. Disappointing thing is that iDrive could (and should) be so much better than it is - E60 owners deserve better.

Greetings:

This is my last post. Gone: Me and ( just before warranty expiration 8/08 ) 2004 BMW E60
present :2006 997C2S, Coupe, Carrera White ,Sand beige full leather, heated seats, bose, 6CD, 19" Carrera Classic wheels self dimming mirrors.
The Porsche is light years ahead of BMW on build quality, dealer service and reliability. PCM is also light years ahead on functionality, intuitive quality and reliability. Porsche is #1 with sales dollars on the planet for some reason. When was the last time you saw a 997 commercial on TV. They don't have to. BMW deceives, thier quality not equal to the schpeal . (sp), the "Ultimate Breakdown Machine ".. and good bye and good night... never again a BMW.

So what is so hard about.. up, down, left, right, push, roll left, roll right... There is like 50 different things you would have to learn to know every option. My parents have the GODS GIFT Idrive in their audi and it is the same except for the "go to buttons" and the new Idrive preset buttons to that. I can say the air flow being in the idrive sucks but that is the only down side.. IDrive IS STUPID SIMPLE... really what is the issue? I had a 335 as a loaner for a day and you know having the Idrive was greatly missed. My hand rests on the nob and it is second nature..... it is much easier than going through the button push on the dash or having to use the wheel buttons
....
