Why does homelink only work when the ignition is on. After pulling into my garage in order to shut the garage the engine has to be running! BMW - do you really want us to shut our garage with the engine running?

Other option is to turn off the engine, then put the ignition on just to shut the garage. Obviously that is a hassle.

 

I think most people have a button to close the door mounted inside the garage -- that's how I do it...

 

I think this is retarded too, all the other cars I have owned the homelink stays on even when the power is off. Also why cant I close my sunroof after turning off the ignition my old M3 would let you close all windows and sunroof for 30 secs after ignition was off.

 

I believe the engineers wanted to prevent that if your car would be parked in front of your garage door, one could smash the window and open your garage with homelink and empty your home.
Since the button has the multi purpose (open and close) perhaps it is difficult to differentiate. And your standard remote, you can always take with you, and I am sure no-one does. Perhaps their choice was made to avoid liabilities. I say, for this, it should be sufficient if the key would be in the car (or you have your keyless card with you) to allow it to work.

I did not order this feature and have just my std remote in the side pocket/card holder works well for no extra money

 

Good point Tommy. Whether BMW meant to or not from the outset, I'm sure that's the reason they'll give as to why this is a feature and not a bug...

As for me, I thought, if one wants to smash a window of a car to get into the house, one may as well smash the window of the house. Luckily none of this window smashing has happened to my cars nor houses.

In addition I find the position of the button not convenient, somewhere on the dash or mid-console would have been more ergonomic

 

I don't think it's inconvenient at all. Press it with your thumb while your fingers are situated on top of the mirror. In my opinion, it works fine. No real possibility of an accidental press, etc. Even M-B puts it there...

 

the power supply could be connected the the time lite system. that way it would be powered for the time after ing turn off
