So I was curious and just took this filter out on my 545i... it does growl but its hard to tell if its louder or not. I do think there is a slight increase in power, but no "HOLY CRAP!" moment. Time will tell on the gas mileage. It certainly cant hurt taking the filter out (extra restriction) - the engine will breathe a bit easier - more air is a good thing.

I took mine out today and noticed a tiny difference in throttle response. I have a service appointment with Dinan next Friday and was going to get there opinion. I will report back with any findings...

why not remove the regular filter as well (further less restriction) and just put a coffee filter at the end of intake pipe just before MAF?

I'm gonna leave mine in but I will compensate for it with one of these: http://www.electricsupercharger.com/
Imagine what one entire PSI of boost will do for my performance!

I have had mine out for a few weeks now and there is definitely a difference in hp and rumble... gas mileage has increased by almost 2 mpg and I dont baby my car driving almost 100 miles per day with a good mix of "D" and "DS"...

I looked at mine and it seems that you have to break the plastic tabs to get it out. is that correct? 2008 550i

my 2006 550 seemed to have the filter glued in place, which i had to break apart to take out. just pry with a screwdriver.

Mine has metal clips on the top side that you cant see... i pried it away from the top with a thin flat screwdriver and it popped the tension on the clips.

I have an 05 545i and pulled it out yesterday. I didn't notice any change in sound and can't say I notice any power increase. I'll leave it out since it doesn't harm anything to see if I notice other gains.
