cds are recorded at 128, you can get your songs on your ipod at 256 how is that not as good as cd? its not the ipod its the user
CD bitrate is 1411.2 kbit/s using a 16-bit sample at each sample point. The most important aspect is the sampling METHOD which is lossless PCM in the case of CD data.
Numbers aren't everything in this game anyway. Techniques is everything.
Then it's up to your ears and brain.

When I got my new 535 with SAT radio and was having it activated, the guy at Sirius asked me if I wanted the playboy channel activated as well.
Unfortunately, my better half was in the car with me at the time, and she gave me a very dirty look/glare and I chickened out.
Hmmmmmm.

The iPod is simply a hard drive with a headphone amplifier. It can play a number of different audio formats, both lossy and lossless. "Getting your songs at 256"? I assume you are talking about a 256k MP3 or AAC file. Well, you can do much better quality than that. You can load an uncompressed WAV file on an iPod. But that's not my point.
My point was that.... ignoring the quality issues of different compression formats.... even an uncompressed WAV file gets degraded considerably just because the electronics inside the iPod itself are cheap crap. If you take a quality audio source, and run it through cheap electronics... the result will be degraded.
