i'm putting it in the shop on tuesday. dealer says he's quite certain its the regulator resistor. $349 fix. he claims its easy but from looking at that diy, i will have to agree to disagree.

ok guys the dealer says its the blower regulator but its part of the blower itself. so they have to change the blower altogether. my indy mechanic says that the regulator is separate though. i am looking at the diagram right now and it shows it is separate. does anyone know if the blower regulator is really separate or not? my e60 is build 11/05. thanks!

It is separate. You can find it for about $75-100. see part numbers below. Those were prices I got from a local dealer.
Blower - 64116933910 $132.10
Regulator - 67636988452 $163.82

i just got off the phone with the dealer.

he admitted it was separate but said if it is also the blower, they'd have to go back in again later on (which would of course cost me more money).

since my car is six years old and the blower is probably beat to death and so to change them as a pair would probably be the best bet in the long run.

he did say he was willing to just change the regulator though.

it sucks how he said it was one piece but was probably easier for him to explain it that way to most people.

i work in Engineering and so had him explain it to me in different terms. i know if the blower goes later, it will be a PITA to go back in there. i saw the DIY and don't want to do it myself.

i pick my car up tomorrow.

the dealer replaced the blower and regulator for $650. the service manager had called me back and said it was supposed to be $550 more ($1200) but since his technician goofed up, they committed to do it for $650 still. if it was $1200, i definitely would have DIY'd that bad boy.
