Fellas ,2009 535xi 61k on the dashrunning tip top yesterday , started her up in the garage today and whole car started shaking engine sounding rough and seemed to be stuttering to keep alive , tons of smoke out of the exhaust and the most horrible pungent smell of almost like rotten eggs in the cabin , no codes yet as I was on my way to work and no time , taking it to my mechanic tonight any ideas of what this could be thinking maybe misfire or fuel pump fail ?

The smell of rotten eggs is due to a compound called hydrogen sulfide. This comes from the small amount of sulfur that is present in the fuel. Normally the sulfur is converted to sulfur dioxide, which has no odor. When the converter breaks or the filtering layers have worn down inside the converter, the sulfur is not transformed into the odorless form. Therefore a strong rotten egg smell is produced. Another possible cause for this smell may be that the converter is plugged. Unfortunately you cannot repair a converter but need to have it completely replaced. Two other causes of rotten eggs besides a broken catalytic converter include an engine that is running too hot or a broken fuel pressure regulator. You can easily deal with the fuel pressure regulator by replacing the fuel filter.

It also can be caused by an excessively rich air/fuel mixture. If the engine is/has been experiencing heavy loads this is normal but I doubt this is your issue.

It could me a number of things; you have a turbo on your car and that can cause it too. Look at your coolant level and see if it has went down drastically. If not then you can rule out coolant leak in the engine. If you are not mechanically inclined then let your mechanic break it down and have a look. It should not be your catalytic converter unless you've been driving with misfires for a while. That leaves the fuel filter and turbo.

Something similar happened to my E46 M3. Started it up in the AM after it ran perfect the night before. Engine was barely idling, had no power and the entire car was vibrating. Don't recall a smell though since I was outside. Anyway it turned out to be a bad coil. $35 from Autozone and I was back on the road.
