I'm quiet worried after reading this, I have a 523i and am struggling to reach 20mpg. Currently on 17-18mpg, and getting around 24/25 on a motorway run.
Will mention it to BMW when it goes in for some work this friday.

Glad you got your issues sorted!

OK - here is a summary of the fix from tha BMW paperwork after mine was fixed.

Affects E60 61 63 90 91 92 93 each with N53 engine
from production 01.12.2006

"resonance noise from around the high pressure pump which is transferred via the fuel delivery line and its line clips to the bodyshell and as a result into the occupant area"

measure needed is 1) modified DME application (normal from July 2008)
2) modified fuel hose

that should be enough to get your dealer to fix it.
Cheers
Kirk

2) Loose front centre armrest. The front armrest clicks and creaks whenever my arm is rested on it when driving. The noise is slightly lessened when the sliding section is extended, but whenever the handbrake is applied, it dissengages the armrest from its extended position and pushes it back from it's 'locked' position.
Try applying some sort of lubrication on the armrest moving parts. That should stop the noise.
