BMW is working on giving me another car and I am thinking of the SMG this time maybe it will have less problems.


What I didnt like when I drove one last year was the slow jerky shifts.


Is the SMG faster than Steptronic?


My car is adapted pretty well and it is quick but I have the gearbox confused all the time and it lurches, bangs and gets in the wrong gear and wont come out at times, typical auto box

I dunno.. but after getting 16.x my SMG box is working great! much smother shifts and havent had a BANG since... This is how it should have been in the first place... but since BMW did release fixes for it and acknowledged that there were problems I give them full credit and am happy with the results.

Ok do the gear changes seems faster and more sporty?


What version software do you have?

In reguards to more sporty or not from the previous version that I dont remember or notice. They seem to be about as "fast" but it does shift better and smother now in both modes. If I'm driving normally and not pushing the car hard and if I use sports mode the gear changes are too fast, hence sports mode hehe. If I accelerate at normal speed in sports mode I can feel the car letting out the clutch faster and it would lurch the car forward. COMPLETLY normal, just like how you would if you had clutch control... if you let out too fast it will lurch the car forward.

Otherwise if I'm driving a little more aggressive and pushing the car I think the shifts in sports mode is great. shifts fast enough to propel me to 60 in good time.

So in other words I think the new improved software is good.

I dont know which version to be exact... 16.2 or 16.1 when I made the appoitment they had 16.1 but when i called in a few days before I took the car in they had 16.2 but the tech i worked with before said 16.1 would be the fix so I dont know if he uploaded 16.1 or 16.2 for me, either way I dont think theres much or any changes for SMG software itself.
