I have driven the GTI with DSG and must say it is a fantastic car - I would definitely recommend this as a second car especially with the DSG gearbox

Interesting. This time last year I drove the R32 and found it strangely reticent.

Could be my driving style of course. So be prepared for this car to be different things to different drivers.

Got my wife a Golf 140 TDI with DSG box - great fun and very efficient. It's so fast with the changes and even blips throttle on downshifts. Why can't BMW offer this facility?

For what it's worth, Jeremy Clarkson likes the Mk5 Golf GTI. According to his review in the Times he says "What you get here is a 146mph sports car. And a convenient hatchback. All rolled into one. I?d buy a white one".

EVO magazine gave it 5 stars with the MoreGo 250 upgrade, so possibly get a used one from 2006 (nicely run in) and upgrade it...? Should be good fun. Build quality and refinement are nowhere near E60 standards, but I guess that's why you're keeping the 5 Series...

I seriously considered a Golf GTI, but ended up trading my E60 for an E92 - which is surprisingly practical for a sports coupe.

Sorry to say but the C30 Volvo is a  !

A Ford Focus with a premium price - rip off!

The Mini Cooper, soon as a brand new version, is it!

Subaru outback is a mule and new can be nice for under 25k.

But I dig the A3!
I concur on the suba. Cheap, reliable, AWD.

is that a Subaru Legacy in the UK? Also note his budget is 20k GBP which is roughly 38K USD.

It's true that the C30 is a posh stylish looking Focus ST; which drives best in it's class. And the Volvo's interious is nice, with nice leather, nice plastics, and good quality (much better than a Ford, almost like a VW). I'm going to give it a try, not just -ing it down without even trying it out. That's  deluxe.

I liked how the old Mini drove, can't see why I wouldn't like the new one. But for me it looks like a girl's car with it's retro poppy styling, but that's a matter of taste.

The A3 2.0Tq is very quick, i was seriously beaten by one the other day. It was probably chip tuned, but that's my 530d too...

And BTW why is this thread in the 'E60 Discussion'?

Must say that all these small cars look like "girlycars".
I suppose we all have wifes/girlfriends...

Just checked out some AutoBild tests on the net:
VW Golf 200 hp was their favorite but the Mini for the Lady...

I had a Mini Cooper when my precious E60 was in for a paint repair (keyed down drivers door - bast**ds)
My wife would not get the weekly shopping in the back - was fun though

Sorry if I have posted in the wrong place, I would never enter a VW Forum though
