My US '04 530 had a donut spare in the trunk...Maybe Canadian BMW's are different?
As far as I know, any E60s that comes will RFT from factory in Canada, they don't have spare. Correct me if I am wrong, Canucks...

I drove from San Francisco back to LA with 0 tire pressure on run flats (my old 530). No worries. I wish they came with the 550. I'd rather drive on a "flat" run flat versus a donut spare any day.

BMW Recommends that with 4 passengers and luggage, runflats should never be driven for more than 40 miles............................................. ...........................
never be stranded......yea right !!!!!

In the UK it could take 40 miles to the next motorway exit, never mind tyre shop!

I can put my donut spare on in less than 10 mins and drive on it for as long as I want.....................oh yes and I can continue to use the car whilst the flat tyre is being repaired, not be without the car 'cause the tyre shop does not have the right size, or it's a public holiday or a sunday.

I am at the same crossroad here, my rfts on the 550i are shot with 14k on them. I have a spare in the car, and I am going to replace all four of them with the goodyear F1's. Getting out of the car to change a tire is not a big deal to me, and I am looking forward to getting a better ride, with more grip out of the non rfts.

I think you guys are misunderstanding me... I know the benefits of both RTF and non RTF. I would rather go with non RTF. But I am worry about the unthinkable. If the car came from the factory with RTF, you don't the a spare donut in the truck, are I correct? So what did you guys do if that's the case? Buy a spare donut to fit into the truck or just leave as it's, driving on non RTF without the spare. In that case, when the unthinkable occurs, you will just be waiting for tow truck??
Compact spares, jack and tools should be available at your BMW Dealer Parts Department. You have at least two options. Replace RFT's with conventional tires and purchase:
1. Compact spare and required tools, or
2. BMW Mobility Kit (sealant and air compressor) used in M Roadsters.
If you don't mind giving up trunk space you could store a conventional wheel/tire for a spare there.

Read your manual again..... It's up to 150 miles @ 50mph.

A magazine here tested RTF and they done 600 km or so .
I can only say I had 2 punctures on the Mini and I drove 2-3 days per tyre with them : the only precaution was to lift the car on the jack during night.
Maybe on a 520i/520d I would suggest RTF.

My new e60 will be here in 4 weeks, it comes with the 18 RFT tyres. I am trading in my e46 at the same time. Does the E60 with RFT come without a jack and tools ?, if so proabably best i keep the jack, tools and spare from the E46 ?

thanks

My manual states varying distances according to load. I think KAF is somewhere about right with 40 miles when fully loaded. One of the reasons I got the Space saver and I changed from 17" RFT to 19" staggered setup with non-RFT. Better ride and handling is the result
