The side gills in the current M models are definitively a reminiscence to BMW?s 507 coupe from the 1950s. It was a breathtaking design by Graf Goertz and presented as BMW?s first V8 sportscar in 1955, only around 250 were built.
The 507 must be worth a mill ? today!
I saw the ortherday a Z8 in the city traffic - the modern 507 - wow!

While the BMW 507 had the gills in the 50's, it was not the first BMW to have gills. The 327 and 328 had them in the 30's. Even before that some BMW Dixie's had them in the 20's.
