While the BMW 507 had the gills in the 50's, it was not the first BMW to have gills. The 327 and 328 had them in the 30's. Even before that some BMW Dixie's had them in the 20's.

In fact most early sportscars had gills - which were mainly functional for engine cooling

i think SHARKS did (they look so mean with those thingy on them)!!
