I saw a Buick Lucerne yesterday. Not a bad looking car and it even has side gills. The Maserati Quattroporte also has gills as does the M5. Who started the gill thing and what other cars have them? It's hard to include Buick in the same paragraph as the Maserati and M5. Mark

BMW has had the "kidneys" since day one.

All others, especially Buick, are copycats.

The pic is of so called Neue Klasse BMW's.
The NK BMW's where introduced in 1962.

The NK is also the grand, grand, grand, grand,
grand dad of the E60.

Gills or Grills?

reminds me of an anecdote once seen scribbled on the back of a mens toilet door:

I like grills!

You mean girls.

I know what I like!

He is talking about the side gills.... which are seen on the M3 & M5.

I also noticed that the Cadillac Escalade has side gills, now..... as do the ghetto-pimp versions of the Chrysler 300.

These are blatant rip offs, almost as bad as the kidney grill ripoff seen by the entire Pontiac product line. Many car companies have also ripped off the Bangle butt. Mercedes new S class is a prime example of shameless imitation.

Uups, I did go wrong here.

I'm talking about the grill = BMW kidneys.

But gills have have been on racing cars almost forever.

But not always, here's a pic of my dads Mercedes-Benz 220 racer
with which he won the second place in the Thousand Lake Rally in 1954!!!!

Actually the pic is more important than this thread, to me.

A 52 year old Rally World Champion pic

I think he means gills, as in the side vents on the engine compartment. I think the Buick Lucerne has either 3 or 4 per side, depending on the engine size.

Buicks had those "portholes" a long time ago, like 40s and 50s, and that is what the Buick Lucerne is referring to. Old Roadmasters had those. Harley Earl put those on. http://www.michaelfurman.com/docs/gal_44.html

They are legitimate for cooling in some cars. In others they are just design allusions to ventilation ports and to the external exhausts of old cars from the classic era. Cords had cool ones in the 1930s. http://www.hubcapcafe.com/ocs/pages01/cord3601.htm

I too think the original poster ment the side vents.

Not sure if they were first seen on the M3... but I think it was the M3 that made them so famous today.

The recent addition to the side ports on Buicks are a hope to capture the days of old. They used to be called "Four Holers"
