My Ride: 2005 BMW 525D M-SPORT // Grey // SB attached
Default

Hi,

New to the forums, as I recently purchased an e60 M-sport.

I am trying to find everything wrong with the car so that I can report it and get it fixed.

I am hearing/feeling a knocking when I turn sharply at a bend at a bit of speed. For example, when turning at a roundabout, I feel the steering knock at times. It's really strange. I can also feel the car drift to one side. The tyre pressures are perfect, and have been checked twice.

Can anyone pleae advise what this may be ?

Thanks

I too am having the knocking sound...but only when I turn left. It took 3 trips to the dealer and a ride alolng before they heard it...and when they heard it, they didn't like the sound of it. They couldn't track it down the cause and opened an investigation with BMW Canada. They are expecting to hear back from them this week on what to repair/replace. My guess is a rack...

This may sound dumb, but I thought I was having a knock in my steering when turning hard right. Turns out I had an item in my driver's door pocket that fell over every time I turned hard right

So give all of your bins a check to see if there are any loose items laying around.

Cheers

I can feel the knock right up through the stering wheel at times. Believe me, nothing's being tossed around in my car, while it's in motion anyway...lol

my dealer fixed it 2 times. first time they thought it was the windshield wiper motor. I didnt how that would make it but the sound dint go away. then they changed part of the rack. that solved the problem. now there's a slight whine when i turn the wheel. maybe the active steering is acting up. it's still in for service

Thats really weird Ive been having the SAME problem!! Although did not want to bring it up to the dealership until something was actually affecting the car itself besides a noise. Get back to us on what your dealer says. Thanx!

Anyone?
Member Ziering545i experienced knocking in his old 545's steering wheel/column....turned out he needed the steering rack replaced, not just once but a few times. It was supposedly a known issue on that car. It drove him crazy from what he told me.

His new M5 also experienced a knocking or clunking in his steering wheel/column, and it turned out to be a bad lower control arm in that case.

Check both out!

Yes, it's the steering rack.
The short axle that steering column connects to the rack became loosen ...Reparable by replacing O-ring and gasket, but I don't think they will try fix it...

You can check by turning off engine and with the wheel in straight line (centered) turn steering wheel left/right rapidly and continually with short moves. If you hear it, then 99.9% this is the issue.
