Hey everyone:

I was at Chevron today for their "top tier" gas, right by the button for the supreme 93 octane when I picked up the diesel handle and tried to insert it into my tank. A little bit of residual I believe went into the vents under the main insertion site for the pump end. Do you think that I will have major problems? It couldn't have been more than 30-50 ml absolute tops.

Any input would be appreciated. Those idiots need not put the supreme button by the diesel pump. Im a little teed of.

Thanks guys.

If only a bit you will be ok, just keep topping it up with petrol to dilute the diesel more. petrol in diesel is more of a prob as the diesel is used to lube the fuel pump and the compression ratio a lot higher which would cause the petrol to ignite whilst the piston is still relatively early in its compression stroke causing allsorts of damage

50 ml is nothing, when you put diesel into a gasoline tank - with the diesels it's an other story.

70 liters of gasoline and less than 0,05 liters of diesel is not a problem of any kind.

Not directly your issue but I filled up at the Premium pump with my 740 and within two blocks the engine died. $2800.00 worth of damage. The station had, the night before, converted a diesel pump/underground tank to Premium and forgot to purge the hose/line. Wow.

Sorry to read about your mishap juris335 As they say, shit happens.
Yes, for sure if you fill up a gasoline engine with diesel and drive it - it's very bad.

Also if you fill up a diesel car with gasoline - it's a disaster.
But the diesel BMW's has a filling whole that into a gasoline "gas pistol" don't fit.

But be careful out there at the pumps!

Nah. You're OK. An ounce or two isn't going to affect (infect) a whole tank of gas. There's no telling what kind of residue we pump in there every time we fill up anyway. I would top it off after a 1/4 tank is burned a couple of times though, just to be safe.

Yeah I know, I should have been paying more attention. At least they design the diesel pump handle not to fit in a regular tank, so I am good that way. It just freaked me out as I have less than 1100 miles on this expensive car.

I get the darwin award for the day.

Last April, very early in the morning, I managed to fill my car (from empty) with Super unleaded.

Luckily I realised this when I went to pay for the fuel, and didn't start the engine. Called the BMW service, who sent a tow truck. The driver immediately removed the fuel pump fuse as apparently that primes in ignition point 2. I got off lightly - ?300 or so including the wasted tank of petrol and refilling with diesel!

Stupid boy!!

I now never refuel before having my first triple espresso of the day!!!!
