Why does the gas pedal have like a stop point that you have to push harder to go past?

My 3 series also had this I could never figure out why.

Does that apply to manuals only or steptronic as well?

It's called the "kick-down" switch and I'm pretty sure it's only on the steptronic and SMG transmissions. (Can't think of why the old-fashioned manual would need one...)

I found this out when I test drove my ex-gf's 325 back in 1992. I thought it was the coolest function ever.

My Ride: '04 545iS 6 spd, bought new via eBay, 11/05; Blk/Gry, Cold, L7, PDC, BMW Rear seatcover for pets. First "Bumwa" was a new 1971 2002. High performance 5s since 1987. Beamer motorcycles too, currently on an 07 BMW K1200 GT; also a Moto Guzzi 1000 SP III.

I recently installed one--by putting in my E-39 BMW rubber winter floor mats. The sculpted tongue that went behind the free-standing accel pedal now resides on top of that black box/platform beneath the E-60 pedal, impeding travel.

OK, I did shift the mat to the left, but that's a weird looking black box down there; kinda like the loud pedal on an electric guitar. Since this is drive by wire, do you suppose it could be the same rheostat in there as used by Fender?

kick-down man. sometimes even 2 gears down.
It is basically a button under the gas pedal which you have to push and the tranny will go down on gears as much as possible
