Have had my car for nearly 2 months now and absolutely love it....only minor things I have noticed are (1) engine seems to fight against me when I'm in Drive Sport mode and going between 20-30MPH and (2) more importantly, I do not seem to be getting anywhere near the 17 City 27 Highway mentioned by BMW....seems more like 15 City and 20 Highway, at best--with my gas bill nearly doubling from previous car and same driving patterns/mileage......anyone else notice this....I tend to almost always drive in Drive Sport mode--is that a factor?

Yes, driving in Sport mode will definitely lower your gas mileage! Driving in DS, your car will NOT go into 6 gear (overdrive) at highway speeds, therefore you are running a higher RPM on the highway.

That is one factor. I assume you keep your tires properly inflated. And are your numbers coming from the onboard computer or are you calculating the old fashioned way when you fill up? The onboard computer is noted for not being very accurate.

With CIP 16.2, DS shifts to 6th on Highway. Believe me. It did not in when I had CIP 13.2 loaded. I think it's cool.

I have 16.2 and my car does NOT shift to 6th in DS mode - hangs around at 3000 RPMs, when I change to D mode it upshifts and RPMs drop to 2000+. So there are two possibilities here - the 545i is different from the 530i in this regard, or my dealer lied to me about putting 16.2 in the car.

Thats what I'm afraid of... dealer is just going to lie and go ya ya we installed it. ARGH! And I know what they're going to say when i ask for a print out... WE DID IT OK!

Well, can the 545i owners with Steptronic reading this tell us whether or not their vehicle pulls 3000 or 2000 RPMs at highway speeds (i.e. 6th or 5th gear) in DS mode? Give your software version too, if you know it. Thanks.

I am willing to bet this is a V6/V8 behavioral difference.

C'mon guys I need to know this... if you have a 545i with Steptronic all you have to do is look at your RPM gauge and switch between DS and D once on the way home from work.

Just returned from driving my 2006 530i from California into Nevada and the mountains of Utah. 2500 miles in total with an average of 27.4 MPG. Used MS a little.

Talked to the dealer who did my upgrade... they say this is normal with DS, and confirm that I have 16.2 in my car. So it must be a V6/V8 difference. Still would be nice to get confirmation from other 545i owners.

Just reread this post. Will check out my car in the next day or two and get back to you about the RPM. Hopefully some others will also.

Why would a 530 go into 6th in DS mode and a 545 wont? I would figure its the other way around the V8 has more power and would still be able to pull in 6th at 65mph better than a 530 can at the same speed and same gear.

Could it have something to do with the adaptive transmission 'learning'...?

In DS, cruising about 72 MPH on the interstate and the RPMs were right about 2,500. Dropped it into D and the tranny dropped into 6th gear and to about 2,100-2,200. I have version 15.0 of the software in my Jan 2004 build 545.
