Our gas mileage isn't anywhere CLOSE to what is advertised. We are in the mid-low teens in combined city/hwy.

Traveling from Long Island to Annapolis MD this past weekend, I used exactly 9 gallons to go 262 miles in my 545i. Nearly all highway, without stop and go. That calculates to 29.1 mpg. Speed between 65 and 70mph, but all acceleration was done very gently. In my book, this is incredible for a 325 hp, 4000lb car.

OTOH, under hard acceleration you can watch the gas gauge drop, but it's nice to be able to choose either frugal operation or sparkling performance.

My gas mileage improved when I stopped accelerating very gently.

I found that by accelerating very gently I would barely get up to speed before I need to slow again for whatever reason. By accelerating briskly (not full throttle mind you but quick nonetheless) I'd be up to speed and basically coasting for quite some time before I need to change speeds again. Helped a great deal, noticeable.

I can see though that for a trip like you made there's not as much stop and go as in my commute. Agreed, 29 mpg is fantastic for a 5 passenger high performance sedan such as this.

[quote name='kmslo530i' date='May 9 2005, 03:59 PM']I'm not sure I have to do this, but since upgrading to 16.2 I've decided to drive mostly in D and get the car used to my driving style which is...well....ummm......yeah, I like to go!!? I was unhappy before 16.2 with the acceleration lag, but it really seems to be much improved.? The engine just seems to growl as I accelerate now....I have hardly used DS in the 3 weeks or so since I did my upgrade.? This alone was worth the upgrade to 16.2 for me!!? I'll be anxious to see what you think after driving it for a few weeks Alohalc......

i got my car back few hours ago and only one word, "wow!" i love 16.2 ! i completely agree with you. i don't use ds mode anymore. well, at least not for the past few hours. i've been "suffering" from the lag for almost a year and finally it drives like a real bmw now .

I have not heard anyone question the impact of the wider sport tires vs the stock non-sport tires (on the non-545 models). The gas mileage would certainly be different with more rubber on the road all other things being equal.
Also, I noticed a big difference in mileage as the engine and transmission broke in. Started at 18 and now have 21+ mpg.
As for type of acceleration, with all the gears we have, the sooner you get into a higher gear, the better for mileage; so a brisk start is better. Think of it like this, during acceleration, the mpg gage is basically pegged to zero but soon rises to 30; so keep the gage from being pegged at zero for a minimum of time. Gentle acceleration keeps the gage pegged for a longer time and keeps you in a lower gear, and takes more gas to get you up to speed. This is all happening in a couple of seconds at every stoplight or intersection.
